How Long Is A Reasonable Time To Have Christmas Lights On While Being Environmentally Friendly?

Nov 4th, 2009 by shecommerce

I’m ‘making’ a green city and I want to include having Christmas lights on for a certain about of time to save electricity. How long do you think is reasonable? From dark to 3 hours after dark? From 1 hour before dark to 4 hours after dark?

I say never. I don’t know why lights are supposed to represent Christmas. I say they are a waste of energy and money, not to mention all the people who get injured each year putting them up. They are yet another cheap plastic product coming from China and contribute to the air pollution and are so cheap miles of them are tossed into the landfill because a single bulb burned out or a wire broke. I enthusiastically celebrate Christmas, but use earth friendly decorations.
If you aren’t that green yet and are still buying into the retail/marketing materialistic Christmas, then I would say limit them to 2-3 hours per day, and use a timer so they don’t get left on all night. Think about who you are displaying them for, yourself or the Joneses, if for yourself then have the timer go on a few minutes before you come home in the evening and turn them off when you come inside.

Why not use a mixture of solar powered and electric?
There are some really pretty solar powered lights now and the light they give off is much stronger than it used to be. I have a few indoor strings (for the Xmas tree etc.) that are electric and then all the outdoor strings are solar.http://www.lovethyspace.co.uk/lighting/c…

Turn them on at sundown and off about 11pm.
We use timers to do this.
Turn them off completely after the New Year and then take down all decorations.
    Have a Merry Christmas !!

Get a timer for them to come on at dark and turn off about the time you go to bed.
